Powering Arctic Research: A Tycon Systems® Case Study

Tycon Systems Artic Case

The Challenge

Conducting research in the Arctic is no easy task. Each spring, Polar Bears International deploys up to six HD camera systems in extremely remote locations across northern Canada and Svalbard, Norway. These systems are placed directly in front of polar bear dens to study the behavior of mothers and cubs during the denning season.

The challenge is twofold: first, the environment is harsh, isolated, and unpredictable. Second, once the systems are deployed, researchers must leave the area undisturbed for 8 to 12 weeks, requiring the equipment to operate reliably without maintenance. The solution needed to provide consistent power, support high-quality 4K video recording, and function either connected to the internet or fully autonomously.

The Solution

To meet these demands, the system integrates several Tycon Systems® products, including the TP-SW8-D PoE switchTP-VRHP-1256 voltage converter, and the TPDIN-Monitor-WEB3 remote monitoring device

Together, these components create a dependable power and communication system capable of running multiple devices through PoE. The setup allows cameras and sensors to operate efficiently while also enabling remote monitoring of system performance when connectivity is available.

This combination ensures that all equipment within the “Polar Bear box” is powered, managed, and optimized for long-term deployment in extreme conditions.

The Result

With Tycon Systems® solutions in place, the camera systems can be deployed and left to operate independently for weeks at a time. Researchers are able to capture high-resolution 4K video of polar bear activity without disturbing the natural environment.

The reliability of the system allows Polar Bears International to gather critical data on denning behavior, as well as calibrate information from tracking collars and environmental sensors. Whether connected or fully autonomous, the system continues to perform, delivering valuable insights from some of the most remote regions on Earth.

This application highlights how Tycon Systems® products provide reliable, efficient power solutions for even the most demanding and mission-critical environments.
