Available calculators
Use one calculator for a specific question or work through several of them when sizing a complete off-grid or backup power system.
Enter the equipment load and operating time to estimate daily energy use, battery requirements, and the solar capacity needed to recharge the system.
Estimate how long a battery bank can operate a known load when solar, AC power, or another charging source is unavailable.
Find the available solar resource for your location. Peak sun hours help determine how much solar generation is available to recharge the battery bank.
Determine an appropriate solar panel angle based on location and season to improve solar collection throughout the year.

Explore ControllersSystem sizing basics
An off-grid or backup power system is sized from the equipment load outward. Each part of the system depends on how much energy the equipment uses and how long it needs to operate.
Add the power requirements of every device in the system, including cameras, radios, routers, sensors, controllers, heaters, lights, and other equipment.
Combine equipment power with operating time to determine how many watt-hours the system uses during a typical day.
Determine how long the system must continue operating without solar or another charging source. This establishes the required battery reserve.
Use the installation location and seasonal peak sun hours to determine how much solar energy is available to recharge the battery bank.
Account for temperature, weather, wiring and conversion losses, shading, panel conditions, battery performance, and changes in equipment load.
Common applications
The same sizing process can be used for many remote applications. What changes is the equipment load, operating schedule, backup requirement, and available charging source.
Calculate power requirements for IP cameras, wireless links, lighting, recorders, cellular equipment, and other security devices at remote sites.
Size continuous power for wireless bridges, access points, radios, switches, routers, and other network equipment that must remain online.
Estimate solar and battery requirements for sensors, telemetry equipment, cellular routers, monitoring systems, and other unattended electronics.
Calculate power and backup requirements for controllers, communications equipment, SCADA electronics, instrumentation, and other remote field equipment.
