Powering Remote Living: A Tycon Systems® Case Study

The Challenge

Providing reliable power to remote cabins can be complex, especially in mountainous regions where grid access is unavailable. In this case, a 2,200 sq ft recreational cabin near Mt. Pleasant, Utah relied entirely on a diesel generator for electricity. While effective, this setup was inefficient for continuous, low-power needs such as security cameras and internet connectivity when the cabin was unoccupied.

The goal was to transition to a solar power solution that could deliver consistent energy year-round while reducing reliance on the generator. However, installation presented additional challenges. Mounting solar panels on the cabin roof was not ideal due to structural concerns and suboptimal roof angles, which would reduce efficiency and increase system costs.

The solution needed to provide dependable, off-grid power for both continuous background loads and intermittent usage when the cabin was occupied—all while performing reliably through varying seasonal conditions.

The Solution

To address these requirements, the system implemented a Tycon Systems® pre-engineered solar power solution designed for off-grid applications.

Instead of roof installation, the solar array was ground-mounted in a location optimized for maximum sun exposure, particularly during winter months when solar availability is reduced. The system was configured with approximately 1,440W of solar capacity and 720Ah of battery storage, carefully sized to support the cabin’s average continuous load of around 210W.

The setup powers essential systems including lighting, ceiling fans, a wireless bridge, security cameras, and a video projector, while also maintaining connectivity and monitoring capabilities when the cabin is unoccupied. A conduit system connects the solar installation to the cabin, enabling efficient transmission of power and data.

By combining solar generation, battery storage, and optimized placement, the system delivers a reliable and self-sustaining energy solution tailored to the cabin’s usage patterns.

The Result

With Tycon Systems® solutions in place, the cabin now operates with consistent, renewable power throughout the year. Even during winter months with reduced sunlight, the system has maintained fully charged batteries, ensuring uninterrupted operation of security cameras and environmental monitoring systems.

When occupied, the cabin has sufficient power to support everyday electrical needs, while the diesel generator remains available only as a backup—but has not been required in practice.

This deployment demonstrates how Tycon Systems® solar solutions can efficiently power remote properties, reducing dependency on traditional generators while delivering reliable performance in off-grid and environmentally challenging locations.
